Russia's Sputnik V vaccine approved in India by CDSCO

India is short of covid-19 vaccine, the number of covid-19 positive cases is increasing in the second wave. Particularly Maharashtra is bearing brunt of the second wave. India needs to vaccinate its citizens as soon as possible. Russia's Sputnik V was approved by Central Drugs Standard Contro Organization. It will become India's third vaccine after Covishield and Covaxin.

Supnik V was the first vaccine developed in the race of developing the vaccine. It was developed in August last year. The name of the vaccine is inspired by the space race of the 1950s. It is the most efficient covid-19 vaccine as it showed 92% efficiency in its third trial. The vaccine has been funded by the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) the country's sovereign wealth funds.

Sputnik V uses a cold-type virus to deliver a small part of the coronavirus spike protein to the body and help develop an immune response to it. It works in the same way as the Oxford/Astrazeneca vaccine. The only difference is that Sputnik uses two different vectors in two doses which are 21 days apart unlike other vaccines. This makes the immune response stronger to confront the coronavirus. The vaccine can be stored at 2 to 8-degree Celsius, which suits the Indian environment.

In India, Russia's RDIF has partnered with Dr Reddy's to conduct clinical trials of Sputnik V for gaining distribution rights in India. If this vaccine gains distribution rights in India then it will be the solution for the shortage of vaccines in India.
